Recently, there have been reports in the news regarding various Toyota recall issues in the U.S. As a distributor of Toyota vehicles in Malaysia, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd. would like to update the public and media on the issue concerning the recalls. The major updates involve:

1.   On the news report on NHTSA investigating concerning the power steering complaints on the Toyota Corolla models in the U.S.,Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan has officially confirmed the Corolla power steering issue IS NOT affecting the Corolla models in Malaysia and other regions. This is due to the different body and size, thus different components used as compared to models in the US.

So far, there are no complaints on power steering for this model in Malaysia. UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd would like to reaffirm and emphasize to our customers in Malaysia that all Toyota Corolla models sold by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd are not affected by this issue.

2.   Further to the recall issue on Toyota Tacoma Drive shaft in the U.S., we would like to clarify that the Tacoma pick up is not sold in Malaysia and is completely different from the Hilux pick up sold by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd.In addition to that, the drive-shaft used in our pick-up model is different from the one used in Toyota Tacoma.

3.   It was also reported earlier in the news regarding the Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), United States to conduct a voluntary safety recall campaign on approximately 7,700 units of Toyota Camry produced from early Feb 2009 to late March 2009. This is to inspect a power steering hose that may be in contact with a front brake tube. This contact could leak to a hole in the brake tube and cause a possible brake fluid leak.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd would like to reiterate to our customers in Malaysia that we have received confirmation from our principal, Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan that all Toyota Camry models sold by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd are not affected by this voluntary recall exercise. The components of the affected models used in the US markets are different from the Toyota models sold in Malaysia by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Message by Mr. Kuah Kock Heng President of UMW Toyota Motor.

TO OUR VALUED CUSTOMERS,

Thank you for your strong support towards Toyota all these years.

More than 70 years ago, Toyota entered the auto business based on a simple, but powerful principle; that Toyota would build the highest-quality, safest and most reliable automobiles in the world. The company has always put the needs of our customers first and made constant improvement to our vehicles as top priority. That is why, in Malaysia, Toyota has been the No.1 top seller after the National cars for the last 19 years.

Lately there have been various media headlines concerning recalls affecting Toyota products. It started from the US, then Europe and China, concerning the performance of certain components (floor mats, accelerator pedal, brakes – some models mentioned were Camry and Corolla). Such news may have caused concern and worry amongst our Customers.

I take this opportunity to re-confirm that the recall does not affect the Toyota vehicles retailed by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd except Prius, because the components used are different, and are supplied by different component manufacturers.

We have moved quickly to resolve the Toyota Prius Anti-Lock Braking systems issue. All Prius owners have been contacted for a special service campaign and their cars are being rectified beginning 12 February 2010.

We would like to assure customers who have booked their Prius and who are interested to purchase one thatALL Prius models will go through the corrective measures before delivery.

We at Toyota will revitalise the simple but powerful principle that has guided us for all these years; Toyota will build the highest-quality, safest and most reliable automobiles in the world.
